According to superstition, opening an umbrella indoors brings bad luck (like most superstitions—are there any superstitions with good outcomes?)
Of course opening an umbrella inside does not bring bad luck in and of itself, but obviously it does make it more likely that one would knock something over and break it (which could very well be bad luck).
